Driving with a BTS
It is sometimes possible that you can still drive a car with a visual impairment, with approval from the CBR. This can be done with viewing strategies to compensate for your specific visual impairment, training and aids, and extensive research is required beforehand.
One tool is a bioptic telescope system. When there is reduced visual acuity, limitations may arise in motorized traffic participation and general mobility. To reduce these limitations, a bioptic telescope can be of added value. The bioptic telescope is a small monocular (one eye) telescope that is placed at the top of the right or left spectacle lens. The telescope has an average magnification of 2 to 4 times and is therefore useful for better distance observation. The user spends most of the time looking through normal spectacle lenses. A short nodding movement is sufficient to observe the essential information at a distance through the telescope.
Auto-Mobility is not new, it has been around for almost 15 years and is a tried and tested approach and is offered across the country. What is new is the video with which Royal Visio shows how this works and what the experiences are of Nadine and Piet, drivers with a visual impairment. You can watch the video here. Thanks to the correct training and certified driving school lessons, they have obtained their medical fitness to drive through the CBR.
