👩⚕️ Today is an important day for research into hereditary optic nerve disorders. Cansu de Muijnck is defending her doctoral thesis in the Academy Building of Utrecht University. Cansu is affiliated with the Eye Hospital Rotterdam as a resident in training to become an ophthalmologist and conducted research as a PhD candidate at UMC Utrecht.
💙 Cansu is certainly no stranger within our foundation. She has repeatedly supported us as a speaker during the ADOA days and has provided tremendous help behind the scenes with the development of our healthcare provider brochure.
🔬 Her research, titled “Inherited optic neuropathies: From Genes to Clinical Manifestations”focuses on rare genetic diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve and premature vision loss. Together with Prof. Dr. Mies van Genderen and Prof. Dr. Camiel Boon, Cansu has mapped the genetic and clinical characteristics. This is a crucial step to better understand these diseases, predict prognoses, and be able to offer targeted treatments in the future.
As the Cure ADOA Foundation, we are incredibly proud to have been able to make a small financial contribution towards the printing of this important dissertation. Scientific research is the key to better care and hopefully ultimately a cure for ADOA(-plus).
