Participants wanted

Participants wanted: 'View on the double-sensory disability'

People with visual impairment use their hearing more for many daily tasks than people with normal vision. They compensate for the loss of vision with their hearing. People with a hearing impairment can compensate with their vision. But if someone has both a visual and hearing impairment, compensation becomes difficult. We think that people with a dual sensory disability experience problems more quickly than people who have one of the two disabilities. With this research we want to find out whether that is indeed the case.

We are looking for participants for this study.

You can participate if:

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You master the Dutch language.
  • You can hear and see well.

You can also participate if:

  • Your hearing loss is 25 decibels or more and you can communicate by speech.

And/or

  • Your visual acuity is 0,3 or lower or your central visual field is 30 degrees or less.

Note:

Unfortunately, you cannot participate if you have acquired brain injury (NAH).

What does participation mean?

If you participate, you will be invited to Koninklijke Visio, location Het Loo Erf in Apeldoorn. We will then measure your vision and hearing. This will take approximately 2 hours, excluding travel time. Before you come to the location, we ask you to complete a number of questionnaires via the internet. These questionnaires will cover access to information, communication, mobility and energy balance. This will take approximately 1 hour.

-If you prefer the questionnaires on paper or if you want help completing the questions, you can indicate this to the researcher. She will then make an appointment with you or send the questionnaire to you on paper.

-If you want to participate at another location (not in Apeldoorn), you can indicate this to the researcher, so you may be able to participate in the study elsewhere in the country later.

If you are interested, please send an email to Esther Veenman at e.veenman1@amsterdamumc.nl . You will then receive an information letter with more information about the research. This can be done digitally or by post. You can register without obligation via the registration form included with the information letter, after which the researcher will contact you by telephone or e-mail for questions and explanations.
