For most people with ADOA, vision loss is the central symptom. It is less well known that approximately 20% of people with this hereditary condition also develop hearing loss. When vision and hearing problems occur together, we refer to it as ADOA-plus.
What exactly happens in the ear with ADOA-plus? Why can a cochlear implant help in many cases? And what should patients look out for during the examination, treatment, and aftercare?
To answer these questions, the Cure ADOA Foundation spoke with Prof. Dr. Christoph Arnoldner (Medical University of Vienna), an expert in the field of hearing loss and cochlear implants. In addition, Matthias, an ADOA-plus patient and CI wearer himself, shares a number of practical insights regarding his personal experiences with the implant.
The interview covers, among other things:
- The cause of hearing loss in ADOA-plus
- The possibilities and limitations of a cochlear implant
- Practical considerations regarding the surgery and rehabilitation
